The Confederation of Tourism and Hospitality (CTH) of United Kingdom, was established in 1982 to provide recognised standards of management training appropriate to the needs of the hotel and travel industries. The programmes has been designed by the industry for the industry and it is well recognised and respected through its endorsements by the industries and recognition as an entry requirement to British Universities bachelor programme.

The diploma and advanced diploma level qualification are typically studied during one year period and broadly equivalent to the 1st and 2nd years of British university bachelor’s degree. Candidates can choose from Hotel Management or Tourism Management, with further specialised options in Casino Management or Travel Agency Management.

Year 1 – Diploma in Hotel Management
Course Description
The Diploma in Hotel Management aims to provide students with a broad understanding of the operational aspects of the international hotel industry, and a knowledge of the underlying management principles involved.

Syllabus Overview
·         Food and Beverage Operations – an understanding of the food and beverage operations within the hospitality industry.
·         Food Hygiene, Health and Safety – training in basic food hygiene as well as in industry health and safety issues.
·         Front Office Operations – the role of the front office and reception in a hotel.
·         Facilities and Accommodation Operations – the services involved in the facilities and accommodation department of a hotel.
·         Hospitality Finance – a basic knowledge of hospitality costing and control systems.
·         Introduction to Business Operations – an overview of the separate functions and activities that concern managers in the modern tourism industry.
·         Marketing – an understanding of marketing and its application in the hospitality industry, and how to optimise product penetration.
·         The Tourism Industry – the scope of the tourism industry and the factors affecting tourist’s desire to travel.
·         Business Computing – the knowledge and skills to use I.T in some common applications in the industry.
·         The Global Hospitality Industry – an exploration of the scope of the industry, the various activities within it and its position in relation to the world market.

Year 2 – Advanced Diploma in Hotel Management
Course Description
The Advanced Diploma in Hotel Management aims to provide an understanding of the managerial, decision making and leadership aspects of the international hotel industry. In addition it is also designed to develop independent research and study skills which will be required when working at senior managerial level in the industry.

Syllabus Overview
·         Food and Beverage Management – a broad understanding of the variety of food and beverage operations in the industry and the skills required to manage them effectively.
·         Strategic Hospitality Management – this provides an understanding of the strategic process applied in the hospitality industry, including an internal and external analysis and selecting and implementing future strategic options.
·         Facilities Management – this module covers the operational aspects of this topic and the skills, and understanding required to manage an environmentally friendly operation effectively.
·         Management Accounting – students will gain an understanding of the financial and accounting records used in the hospitality industry and the ways these can aid effective management decision making.
·         Human Resource Management – this module introduces the students to a wide range of theoretical perspectives on how to manage the human resource, supported by extensive benchmarking against ‘real-world’ standards.
·         Management Research report – candidates carry out a research report that involves analysing and interpreting data and making recommendations for the future. In doing so, they develop independent research and study skills that will be required when working in the industry.

·         Travel Agency and Tour Guide Operations – an understanding of travel agency and tour guide operations and the factors to consider to ensure a profitable business.
·         Introduction to Tourism Economics – an analysis of international tourism from an economic perspective, with an emphasis on socio-economic issues and the consequences of globalisation on tourism.
·         Special Interest Tourism – investigating the product range, competitive factors, the appeal and motivation of special interest tourism.
·         Destination Analysis – introduces the cultural, social and physical features of destinations and the issues and trends that affect their popularity.
·         Introduction to Business Operations – an overview of the separate functions and activities that concern managers in the modern tourism industry.
·         Marketing – an understanding of marketing and its application in the travel and tourism industry, and how to optimise product presentation.
·         Finance for the Travel Industry – the financial principles involved and their specific application to the travel and tourism industry.

Year 2 – Advanced Diploma in Tourism Management
Course Description
The Advanced Diploma in Tourism Management aims to provide an understanding of the managerial, decision making and leadership aspects of the international tourism industry. ·         Strategic Tourism Management – this provides an understanding of the strategic process applied in the tourism industry, including an internal and external analysis and selecting and implementing future strategic options.
·         Sustainable Tourism and Destination Management – an investigation into the principles of sustainable management and the factors which influence the management of a tourist destination.
·         Human Resource Management – this module introduces the students to a wide range of theoretical perspectives on how to manage the human resource, supported by extensive benchmarking against ‘real-world’ standards.
·         Management Research Report – students carry out a research report that involves analysing and interpreting data and making recommendations for the future. In doing so they develop independent research and study skills that will be required when working in the industry.

Opening the way to Universities

CTH Management programmes are widely recognised by universities as offering equivalency to degree level study and CTH Diploma candidates may therefore gain direct entry onto the second year of a variety of hospitality and tourism degree programmes. Similarly, CTH Advanced Diploma candidates may enter onto a degree at final year level.
